The Challenge of Writing Colonial Fiction

The Counterfeit Tory by Shannon McNear

Picture
I’m a bonafide research nerd. I’ve been known to throw down books in disgust and badmouth movies others love because of inaccuracy in historical details. Sometimes that inaccuracy is in overall premise, which in my opinion is even worse, but … see? Nerd. Hopelessly perfectionist.

Looking back, I realize it’s possible that this ferocious need to be completely accurate was part of why it took so long for me to get my first publishing contract. (Why I didn’t give up pursuing traditional publication and go indie is another discussion entirely.)

More than ten years ago I turned from writing fantasy (which has its own set of research pitfalls) to historical. For my first novel, a Revolutionary War story, I dug deep into primary sources—first-person accounts of events I planned to write about, regimental rosters, even supply lists. Discovery of actual British regulations on the care of campfollowing wives (yes, that was a thing, and fairly respected and beneficial to the army at the time) revealed the inaccuracy of a popular reenactor myth, which forced me to change the entire premise of my novel.

Picture
But for everything I uncovered, it seemed three other things remained unanswered. Reconstructing what day-to-day life might have looked like for people of the time proved more difficult than I’d ever dreamed, and the impossibility of pinning down certain details drove this girl half nuts at times. Some would tell me, don’t let the details bog you down; what people care most about is the story. But then I’d meet those folk like myself who really do care about the research! Hanging out with living history and/or historical reenactors was enormously helpful but didn’t really alleviate that anxiety. So it took me five years to finish that first historical novel.

Then, I received my first contract—for a novella I hadn’t yet written, oh the irony—and found myself faced with my first deadline. Fortunately I knew, from writing that first historical novel, how and where to research, and was already familiar with much of my subject matter. But once again, how to recreate that setting for readers who likely weren’t as familiar as I was, and yet not be so research heavy the story gets lost? Where do they need more detail, so they can better see or feel the story, and where is less, better?

Picture
Well, as more seasoned authors can tell you, I had to learn to let go of some of the perfectionism. Research as much as I could, then at some point step back and just write the story. Trust that readers either wouldn’t notice my mistakes (and I made a BIG one right away, by accident!) or that the story would be good enough to carry them past all that.

I’ve learned to relax a little more with successive contracts (working on deadline really will do that to you!) but I still try very hard to make my story as accurate as possible. This was especially important where The Cumberland Bride, my first contracted full-length, was concerned, since I’m dealing with a sliver of history that I hadn’t studied before—and this story is part of a series promoted for its historical appeal. Talk about intimidating! But such an honor, as well, and oh, did I have fun digging into fresh research!

I've found that I just need to make notes later in areas I've tweaked facts (in setting, for example) and for areas where I am not an expert. I agree, readers love the story, but super fans of historical fiction love those DETAILS that pull them into the setting. So far, I've only written one story in a place that I haven't visited myself so that helps me as well. I love your dedication, Shannon!

Thanks for hosting us, Sydney!

Thank you so much, Debra! It's hard striking that balance, isn't it? And I love the detail so much, myself. I make lots of notes to myself as well, as I write!

And yes, thank you so much, Sydney!
