About the BookThe ultimate cure that could heal any disease? Crazy. That's exactly what research scientist Marian Creighton has always believed about her father's quest, even if it does stem from a desire to save her sister Ellen from the genetic disease that stole their mother from them. But when her father falls into a coma after drinking a vial of holy water believed to contain traces of residue from the Tree of Life, Marian must question all of her assumptions. He's left behind tantalizing clues that suggest he's crossed back in time. Insane. Until Marian tests his theories and finds herself in the Middle Ages during a dangerous peasant uprising. William Durham, a valiant knight comes to Marian's rescue and offers her protection . . . as his wife. The longer Marian stays in the past, the more she cares about William. Can she ever find her father and make it back to the present to heal her sister? And when the time comes to leave, will she want to? Bestselling author Jody Hedlund is your guide down the twisting waters of time to a volatile era of superstition, revolts, and chivalry in this suspenseful story. About the AuthorJody Hedlund is an award-winning and bestselling author of inspirational historical romances for both youth and adults. As a busy mama-writer, she has the wonderful privilege of teaching her crew of 5 children at home. In between grading math papers and giving spelling tests, she occasionally does a load of laundry and washes dishes. When she's not busy being a mama, you can find her in front of her laptop working on another of her page-turning stories. She loves reading almost as much as she loves writing, especially when it also involves chocolate and coffee. ReviewAuthor Jody Hedlund dove into a new writing genre, time-travel; this genre can be tricky and not all authors are successful with it, but she totally nailed it in the head. The author does an amazing job of writing the time travel part of the story in such a way that it is completely explained why and how the time travel takes place, thus making the story entirely believable. The first half of the story does a lot of laying down the foundations of the time travel, so it does take a little while for the swoon worthy romance to happen. Readers may get a little impatient waiting so long, but it is definitely worth the wait for the second half of the book! The romance in this story is a bit intense and heated and would not be good for Hedlund’s young adult audiences. Another amazing story from this beloved and well-known author!

Excerpt
Washington, DC
January 1982 Frigid air, skates scraping against the ice, the scent of stale popcorn. Amaliya Marcell sat in one of the twenty thousand seats of the Cap Centre and laced up her figure skates before she tugged her leg warmers into place and watched while twenty hockey players worked through their last drill. As soon as they finished, they joined her father at center ice. The great Robert Marcell. Amaliya still missed watching her father compete, but his transition from player to assistant coach to head coach had allowed her to enjoy her routine of spending time with her dad at work. She could hardly remember a Saturday when the Washington Capitals were home and she hadn’t been here with him. Travis, the goalkeeper, stepped off the ice and gave her a disapproving shake of his head. “You’re wearing the wrong skates again.” “You sound like my dad.” “Coach knows what he’s talking about,” Travis said. “Maybe for you, but I don’t think I’m going to be joining a hockey team anytime soon.” Amaliya stepped past him. “Figure skates are more my style these days.” “Too bad. With a bit more practice, maybe you could score on me.”Amaliya’s eyebrows lifted. “I scored a goal on you last week.” “That was a lucky shot.” “That’s what he always says,” her dad said as he joined them.Amaliya grinned. “Yeah, I know.” “Travis, get some rest. It’s the kid’s turn to play.” “Kid?” Amaliya stepped onto the ice and twirled to face her dad. “I hate to break it to you, but I’ll be an adult next week.” “Don’t remind me,” Robert groaned.“Good luck, Coach.” Travis started toward the locker room. “Thanks. I’m going to need it.” Robert turned his attention to Amaliya and spoke in French, his preferred language, thanks to his upbringing in Quebec. “Are you going to play a little one-on-one with your old man?”“Don’t you have to check on your players?” “I can spare a few minutes.” He tapped his stick against the ice. “Show me what you’ve got.” “Okay.” Amaliya combined her years of ballet training with growing up on the ice and executed a spin that resembled a pirouette. “When you skate like that, you look like a ballerina on the ice.”Amaliya laughed. “I am a ballerina on the ice.” “Honey, I hate to break it to you, but most ballerinas can’t do that once they put on ice skates.” “If you say so.” She skated backward so she could still see her dad. “You’re going to let me skate while you’re in your meetings, right?” Robert grabbed an extra hockey stick and held it out. “Play a little hockey with me first, and I might be persuaded.”Amaliya made a quick stop and returned to her father. She took the offering and grinned. “Deal.” Review

More often than naught, my books are set in a place I’ve never been to. Or even better, I create a fictional world I can get lost in. When I wrote Finally A Sweetheart, it was with the understanding that the setting would be in Loveland, Colorado. Just so you know, the closets I’ve probably been to Loveland was driving through the state on a road trip. I vaguely remember stopping at a gas station in Aspen and seeing mountains. For the most part, I slept (what I do on most road trips). So for the Always a Wedding Planner collection I had to go virtual. I pulled up Google maps and zoomed in until the “browse street images” feature popped up, AKA, the orange man. I also did a lot of internet search for people who had visited. I also looked at pictures on Pinterest. All in all, I hope I did the setting justice for those of you who actually live there. If not, my sincerest apologies from a virtual traveler. RL Ashly Loveland, Colorado is a beautiful town. With its backdrop against the Rocky Mountains, it’s the ideal place for a romance novel. After all, it’s the land of love and there’s no better place for a single seamstress to meet a confirmed bachelor-till-the rapture. The Weddings by Design office is set in the downtown area and Kiki enjoyed her colleagues and job. Working with her best friends had its perks. That is until the new office manager moves Kiki’s sewing zone to the garage. Her new work area is a source of conflict in the story. As the descendent of a long line of farmers, placing my characters in a rural setting was something that appealed to me. Kiki Bell inherited her late aunt and uncle’s farm. With the help of her niece and nephew, her family commenced with the daunting task of decluttering the house and outbuildings in hopes of turning the place into a wedding venue. Bing Kelley’s farm is located across the road. He keeps his place in pristine shape. Perhaps it is a sign he has too much time on his hands. Living as neighbors, the setting is used to aid Kiki and Bing’s relationship. Leeann Betts The idea for The Worst-Kept Secret is sort of autobiographical, in that I’m an introvert and my hubby is an extrovert. I can see that this combination works in our marriage, because I’m the one who builds relationships with people we meet through getting comfortable enough to talk to them by asking questions, while hubby does the meeting and introductions. I suspected we weren’t unique in our personality types, so decided to try this pairing in a story. A good romance needs romantic tension, and one of the best ways is if each character has a secret they’re trying to keep from the love interest and from others. Since this is a faith-based book, I didn’t want that secret to be something so serious as to call into question their salvation, so I based the secrets on struggles they were already having in their own lives. I think a good romance also needs a few light moments. From the disastrous limo interview, to the puking pastor, to the coffee debacle, and even the car accident, while each of these were serious moments, I hoped to create an atmosphere of “what more could go wrong?” for both the reader and the characters. Davalynn Spencer Pronounced “LOVE-lund” rather than “Love-LAND” by locals, the “Sweetheart City” snugs against the Front Range at the mouth of the Big Thompson River in Northern Colorado. The river originates in Rocky Mountain National Park and courses through Estes Park before tumbling down to the eastern plains. The area is rich in ranches and farmland, the perfect setting for confirmed bachelor, Ty Ellicott, who carries on the family’s rope-making business following the death of his parents and brother in a single engine plane crash. Ellicott Ropes is home to a sprawling ranch house, barn, and roping arena. A long rope barn, pastures, pond, and cottonwood trees create an idyllic setting for the heart-broken cowboy who keeps his mind off his pain by keeping that mind busy. Saffron (Ronnie) Fare grew up in Loveland, the daughter of schoolteachers. She is more familiar with city life and acquainted with the tree-lined streets of established neighborhoods, small downtown businesses, and outlying shopping centers. She had no desire to leave her famous hometown, and after culinary school bought a quaint yet rundown Victorian home on one of those shady streets. With a small-business loan, she invested in a commercial kitchen, an expense that left precious little for the rest of the house, and the paint and gingerbread trim on her classic home bear testimony to neglect as well as age. |
