About the Book

Picture
As war approaches in 1939, Abby Stapleton’s safety is under threat. Her father, a British diplomat, insists she go back to America until the danger passes. Abby vows to return to her home in London—but where is home? With her family facing mortal danger so far away and feeling herself isolated, she finds it hard to pray or read the Bible. Did she leave God behind in war-torn London too? Abby becomes friendly with Jim, a gardener on her uncle’s estate.

Jim can’t get Abby out of his mind. Did she have a sweetheart in England? Was it foolish to think she’d consider him? He curses his poverty and the disgrace of his father’s desertion and drunkenness haunts him. Can he learn to believe in love for a lifetime and to hope for a happy marriage?

Abby couldn’t know the war would last a long time, nor that she would fall in love with Jim—soon to be drafted by the US Army—or that she’d have to confront Henri, a rejected suitor, determined by his lies to ruin her reputation and destroy her faith in God’s providence. Will she discover the true meaning of home and find happiness with Jim?

Review

rom the home front to the battlefield of WWII, readers will be intrigued by this detailed historical story.  Although the story has an interesting premise, the story tends to drag most of the way, picking up a little towards the end, making it hard for readers to connect with the characters. Readers may find the audiobook especially hard to follow with the monotone and un-enthusiastic narrator.  Due to this, readers may prefer to read a print or e-copy of the book.  The story focuses mainly on a couple during the war and how their relationship stands the test of separation during the war.  It’s about a time of struggle, danger, and feeling alone, but with the help of family and God, all is well.

Title: The Storm Breaks Forth
Author: Terri Wangard
Release Date: April 6, 2021
Genre: Christian Historical Fiction

World War I rages in Europe, and now the United States joins in. Peter Bloch heads to France with the Wisconsin National Guard, but his wife Maren is the one under attack. She’s German-born, and anti-German hysteria is running high. Simple suggestions for coping with wartime measures lead Maren into an active role in the community, but her service doesn’t help deflect suspicion from her. Zealous patriots target her with a vengeance. Peter caught the eye of a major who seems intent on using him as a spy. He’s been fortunate to avoid injury so far, but these activities are likely to get him killed. Peter and Maren dream of the day they will be reunited, but more and more, that day appears to be a mirage.

Review

Although a little slow to start, Terri Wangard has crafted a detailed, well-researched, and powerful story going back and forth between the front lines and the homefront of WWI.  Readers will be enthralled with this story as they are sucked into the rough situations German-Americans were put into due to the war and the fact that they were part German even if they had been born in the United States.  The story shows the reality of the terrifying times, as well as the better times.  This is a wonderful historical novel that readers will enjoy.
