Summary World War I is raging and wealthy suffragette Grace Mabry has decided that she must assist Britain’s cause. Attending a masquerade ball uninvited Grace and her maid, Agnes, hand out gifts of white feathers, indicating the cowardice of these men for not fighting in the war. Grace unknowingly sets into motion a series of events. Embarrassed by her actions, Grace’s father allows her to go to the country with her maid to work for the Women’s Forage Corps (WFC) to keep her out of trouble. Here Grace almost loses her job when a fellow WFC worker pulls a prank on her, allowing all the pigs Grace was driving to the butcher to escape and get into Jack Benningham, heir to the Earl of Stonebrooke’s, gardens. Originally planning to have Grace fired, Jack, or the “Tin Man” as the towns’ people call him, hires her to be his driver in the mornings and work for the WFC in the afternoons. Blinded in an accident, Jack has estranged himself from everything and everyone, except those assisting on his estate. Even though Jack has been blinded by an accident, he still knows where everything is from memory. Jack’s daily morning drives with Grace brighten his life. What first begins as a friendship between Grace and Jack, turns to more, but Jack is engaged to another woman and Jack is on edge as he wonders if Grace is a spy. Wrongly accused, Grace and her father are arrested. Will Jack be able to trust Grace’s friends at the WFC and prove her and her father’s innocence as well as find Grace’s twin brother whom is missing in action in the war, or will Grace and her father be ruined and shot by a firing squad as traitors to the crown?
