Summary
With both Carolin Taylor’s mother and father gone, having drowned in different lighthouse accidents, she now has the responsibility for her younger sisters and brothers. Carolin had been helping her rheumatic father with the duties of the Windmill Point Lighthouse. Now that he is gone, and because Carolin is a women, she is not allowed to work the light and must take her family and vacate the premises of the lighthouse, leaving them destitute. The new light keeper, Ryan Chambers, a Civil War veteran, arrives a week early and before Carolin and her family have had time to gather their belongings and leave. Ryan insists that Carolin and her family should stay in the house, especially with Carolin’s sick thirteen-year-old sister, and he will stay in the boathouse for the week. Carolin is supposed to teach Ryan the workings of the light, but several nights in a row he doesn’t show up to learn and help her because of his drunken and medicated state due to a battle wound. Will Ryan put his life back together with Carolin’s help and fall in love with her? Will Carolin see past the haunted and wounded soldier and help him come to terms with his battle wound, overcoming his alcohol and opium addiction?

I have kind of stayed away from romances lately, but with a husband dealing with PTSD, this sounds really intriguing to me. I could totally relate to love in the face of battle scars.
