Picture

About the Book

I, Holiday Brown, have it all. A platinum record. Multi-million dollar home in Manhattan that I share with my two best friends. Life is looking fantastic until my roommate’s brother decides to bunk in our guestroom while his house gets renovated.

Emmett Bell has always been the bane of my existence. He’s annoying, stubborn, a know it all, and just might be the most gorgeous man I’ve ever laid eyes on. But I refuse to fall for him. Then his sister’s threatened by a stalker and dynamics change. His unwavering faith isn’t quite as self-righteous as I’d always thought, and maybe he has a good side I’ve overlooked all these years.

Or maybe it’s all too much trouble.

The Trouble With Love is the first book in the Christian Chick Lit series: Faith & Fortune.

Love You, Truly by Susan L. Tuttle -- Review

1/14/2020
Picture

About the Book

Picture
Can they discover love is not only real but worth fighting for?

Blake Carlton, the camera-shy son of Hollywood’s Darling, dodges the invasive limelight and scripted relationships that so often accompany fame. But when his mother’s popularity declines and she falls into a depression, he offers himself up as the next bachelor on a reality show, hoping to reignite interest in her career while creating a way for them to finally connect.

After her fiancé dumps her for her best friend, aspiring photographer Harlow Tucker is done with romance—until her beloved, disabled sister requests her aid to start a nonprofit. Harlow agrees to do whatever is needed to help raise funds, even reluctantly costarring on a dating show with a notorious womanizer who distrusts anyone behind a lens.

As Blake and Harlow navigate the superficiality of a reality show, their preconceived notions of love are challenged. Deciding to trust each other feels like the ultimate risk, but taking that chance could lead to a love truly picture-perfect, worth both of their hearts.

Review

Susan L. Tuttle has written an absolutely delightful and charming romance in her novel, Love You, Truly.  The story focuses around a reality TV show and an unlikely romance.  It’s about pushing through past hurt and mistrust and taking a chance on love.  It’s not only about finding romance though, but also about finding the importance of having the influence of God in one’s life.  This sweet romance is an absolute pleasure from cover to cover.  And although not a romcom, this story has the perfect element of humor, adding to the enjoyment of the story.  Readers will absolutely not want to set down this book!

Top Ten Tuesday - Bookish Discoveries I Made in 2019

Bookish Discoveries I Made in 2019

So I don't actually have 10 discoveries, but I decided to share a few discoveries that I did make...
1) I absolutely adore the bookish community.  And I was especially reminded of that when I attended Christian Fiction Readers Retreat (CFRR) (now retired and replaced by Storyfest) in April 2019.  I have made some of my very best friends online through blogging/reviewing.  And I wouldn't have it any other way! Book people are my people!!!

2) I was introduced to Libib and have fallen in love with it!! It's definitely a work in progress, but now I have somewhere I can cataloge my books and keep track of what I have and how many I have.
Picture
3) I love to travel.  Especially to bookish events, such as CFRR (see above), different author events, and Storymakers (a writer's conference).

4) I discovered several fun new authors:
  • Susan L. Tuttle
  • Mimi Matthews
  • Aspen Hadley
  • Rosalyn Eves
to name a few...
5) I love love love having my favorite print books on my shelves, but in all the practicallity, my Kindle app on my phone and my Kindle are the best place for me to read or listen to audio books so that my kids don't wrip my books up.
Picture
6) I absolutely adore booksleeves.  In fact, I have become quite obsessed and all the sleeves I own take up a whole shelf on my bookshelf in my bedroom (and then some).  They make for a great bookstagram picture prop.  My favorite shops are Belle's Book Sleeves and BookGizmo.
Picture
7) I love bookish themed candles.  These also make for a good bookstagram picture prop.  My favorite shops are From the Page, Wick and Sarcasm, and Novelly Yours. Wizz Pop Candles (no longer in business).

1/9/2020

About the Book

Picture
Lady Elizabeth Spaulding’s world has fallen apart. Despite living her entire life to please her demanding parents, the Duke and Duchess of Marwood, she has little to show for it. After Elizabeth’s second failed betrothal, her father’s debts and appalling acts of retaliation force him to flee the country, consigning Elizabeth and her bitter mother to a life of poverty and exile. But Elizabeth’s fortunes change one day when an elderly acquaintance makes her an offer she can’t refuse.

Lady Walmsley, widowed and childless, is in need of a lady’s companion—and who better than the lovely Lady Elizabeth? Determined to rescue Elizabeth from her dreary life in the country, Lady Walmsley secures the help of Kit, the dashing Earl of Cantwell, in her quest. But the young woman they find is a ghost of the charming girl they once knew. Taken in by Lady Walmsley, and with Kit’s enthusiastic encouragement, Elizabeth finds herself pushed further and further from her empty solitude as she discovers the joy of truly living. Now, for the first time in her life, she must decide for herself who she is and if she deserves to be loved.

Review

Author Karen Tuft has written and delightful, charming, and sweet regency romance that readers will adore.  Although a standalone novel on its own, this book can be read as a series with reoccurring characters from Tuft’s other regency novels.  Tuft does an excellent job of showing readers the background of her characters, bringing them to life from the pages.  The main characters are brave, strong, and funny.  And of course the romance and falling in love is an excellent part of the story.  This is the perfect book for readers that enjoy regency romance.

About the Book

Picture
When the new marshal in town needs volunteers, one of the first to sign up is Miss Rosie Decker. And why wouldn’t she? She’s a sharpshooting, horse-taming tomboy—and she’s out for revenge. Marshal Hank Walker is forming a posse to find the man who killed her sweetheart, and Rosie is determined to help track him down. When the marshal refuses her service on account of her being a woman, Rosie is undeterred. If it’s a man Marshal Walker wants, it’s a man he’ll get.

With his posse assembled, Hank Walker is confident he’ll be able to track down the criminal. His confidence grows as he recognizes the incomparable skill of one young man in his posse—Ross. That is, until the day Ross’s mustache falls off, revealing “his” true identity. Rosie Decker has duped him. Banished back to town, it’s time for Rosie to prove her mettle. Though working alongside the unwilling marshal is complicated, it is the unexpected tenderness she feels for him that proves most problematic. How can she demonstrate her skill while also setting out to win the heart of the man who seems bent on keeping her out of his way?

About the Author

I grew up in Payson, Utah. Ever since elementary school I have loved to write. In junior high and high school I was on the newspaper staff. My senior year, I even had my own column: Carolyn’s Corner. While attending USU as a freshman, my journalism teacher, in an effort to “prepare me for the real world of writing," tore down my work to the point that I gave up, dropped my minor of journalism, and concentrated on my other love—biology. I graduated with a BS in Horticulture and an MS in Botany and went on to start my own business in a totally unrelated field: manufacturing puppets.  In 2006, after having raised my five kids and growing my business to a point of being viable to sell, I rediscovered my love of writing. I have since sold my manufacturing business and I spend a good portion of my time writing, or helping my grandkids and my garden grow. I now live in Kaysville, Utah.

Review

Author Carolyn Twede Frank has written a amusing and entertaining story in her novel, Under the Stars.  Although the story is pretty predictable and a bit slow in places, especially where the romance in the story comes in, this story is filled with plenty of intense action, including a posse of men trying to find a murderer, as well as jailing some robbers.  The author has created some fun personalities in her characters, causing readers to want to read and learn more about them.  This story is an enjoyable and sometimes funny western romance read.

Title: On Wings of Devotion
Series: The Codebreakers #2
Author: Roseanna M. White
Genre: Historical Romance
Publisher: Bethany House
Release Date: January 7, 2020
Against Every Warning, She's Drawn Ever Closer to the Man Known as "Black Heart"

All of England thinks Major Phillip Camden a monster--a man who deliberately caused the deaths of his squadron. But he would have preferred to die that day with his men rather than be recruited to the Admiralty's codebreaking division. The threats he receives daily are no great surprise and, in his opinion, well deserved.
As nurse Arabelle Denler observes the so-dubbed "Black Heart," she sees something far different: a hurting man desperate for mercy. And when their families and paths twist together unexpectedly, she realizes she has a role to play in his healing--and some of her own to do as well.
With Camden's court-martial looming, an old acquaintance shows up, intent on using him in a plot that sends the codebreakers of Room 40 into a frenzy. With their fragile hopes for the future in the cross hairs, Arabelle and Camden must hold on to hope--and to each other--if they want to survive.

Excerpt

He straightened. “I’ll not see you throw your life and your fortune away on some money-grubbing scoundrel. I may not be good for much these days, but I can at least scare off the rabble.”
Unbelievable. “The papers have something right, anyway—you are a madman. A raving lunatic.” She moved to step past him, back onto the street.
He blocked her. “You’ll not dissuade me, Arabelle. I’ve made up my mind, so just resign yourself to an escort.”
“I don’t need a . . . a guard dog!” She moved to sidestep him the other direction and, as soon he shifted to compensate, darted around him on the first.
He was at her side within a step. “Woof.”
It was anger simmering. It had to be. She couldn’t let it be amusement, couldn’t let it be gratitude, and certainly couldn’t let it be hope. “Go home, Camden.”
“No.”
“I don’t want your company.”
“Too bad.”
“I’ll have my father—”
“I’ve already spoken to your father. He thinks it capital of me to want to champion you. And has issued a standing invitation for me to come by in the evenings and chat about aviation and the possible applications of the field to his own.”
He would. She gritted her teeth, picked up her pace, and angled her face up at Camden, ready to lambast him with the only truth that might get him to call off this ridiculous plan.
You’ll do me more harm than good.
The words died before she gave them breath. Because when she looked up, he was looking down, and those too-blue eyes of his weren’t just cold. They weren’t just patronizing. They weren’t just determined.
They were the very thing he’d called her—desperate.
“I may not be good for much these days. . . .” He’d been stripped of his squadron, his brothers-in-arms, his purpose. He’d been told he was a villain.
He needed to help. Someone, somehow. He needed to prove, if only in some small way, that he was worthwhile.
But couldn’t Cass be his proof, or Jeremy, or his mother, or some other person he actually knew? Why did it fall to her?
He needs to help. This time it wasn’t just a thought. It was an echo in that place in her heart where the Lord whispered.
She faced forward again. Lord God . . . this is a bad idea. She wasn’t weak, not like Camden had said she was.
But she wasn’t strong either. Not when it came to him.

Faceoff (Northbrook Hockey Elite #1) by Rebecca Connolly et al. -- Review

1/2/2020

About the Book

Picture
She isn’t supposed to want him. He isn’t supposed to want her. But wanting each other is inevitable.

Clint McCarthy has finally achieved his dream of playing for a professional hockey program, and is eager to make his mark with his new team. While getting settled in his new city, he happens across Bree Stone, whom he has known for years, with their respective brothers both being in the famed Belltown Six Pack. But for the life of him, he can’t remember Bree ever looking so attractive. Or being so captivating. Or taking over his every waking thought.

In the middle of her graduate degree, Bree has no time or desire for working on her dating life, or lack thereof, but the impossibly handsome Clint McCarthy coming back into her life makes everything complicated. She shouldn’t be focusing on him, or on them, not when her professional future hangs in the balance. But once she hears about Clint’s past with the Northbrook Hockey Elite program, and where that program stands now, Bree just might find a way to make her career, and a future with Clint, come to life.

Welcome to Northbrook Hockey Elite!

Six professional hockey players used to play on an elite club team together, but have all separated and now play in the pro-hockey leagues. Not all of them were friends, yet circumstances bring them together, and for the greater good, maybe they can put aside their differences.

This fun and exciting story is an excellent kick-off for the Northbrook Hockey Elite swoony sports series.  Throughout the story readers get to see the friendship and eventual chemistry and romance between the two main characters explode, much the game of hockey that is deeply involved in the story as well.  Not only is the main character a hockey player, but he also helps revitalize a youth hockey league that he was once part of.  There is also a fun cross over from characters in the Belltown Six Pack series that readers will love.  Fans of hockey will definitely enjoy this delightful story.
