At age thirty, although not beautiful but kind hearted, Eleanor Braddock believes she has lost her chance of marriage. But when a dying soldier mistakes her for his wife, she decides to find his widow. When Eleanor’s sickly father needs attention, poverty-stricken Eleanor must rely on the generosity of her aunt, Adelicia Acklen of Belmont Mansion, one of the richest and demanding women in America. Adelicia is determine to find Eleanor a husband, but Eleanor has other ideas, as she plans to build a home for penniless widowed women from the Civil War and their fatherless children. When Eleanor meets Marcus Gottfied, she assumes he is one of her aunt’s gardeners. Although Eleanor has her own secrets, little does she know that Marcus also has his. As Eleanor and Marcus fall for each other, can love win out in the end or will Eleanor be expected to marry a man of Adelicia’s choosing? Will Marcus leave his construction designs and roses in America and leave Eleanor’s life forever?
Not surprisingly, bestseller and award-winning author Tamera Alexander has done it again. This historical novel, deeply researched, brings to life both historical events and characters as well as contributions from her imagination of what life must have been like. This tale allows readers a glimpse of high society, as well as a woman who knows her own mind and what she wants. I would recommend this novel to those who love historical fiction with a touch of romance.
