A Pirate at Pembroke by Danielle Thorne Keeping company with a reputed pirate is one thing, but falling in love with him could ruin the eccentric Crestwood family for good... Sophie Crestwood is never going to catch a husband. Her father is a gossip, her mother has her nose in a book, and little Jack has shamefully been dismissed from boarding school. Worst of all, a pirate moves next door into Pembroke Hall. When Sophie's sent to a matchmaking party at a neighboring estate, the pirate from Pembroke arrives and distracts everyone from the summer festivities. Unguarded, her feelings about the mysterious Captain Murdock bloom into a trusted friendship that Sophie fears may come to mean more than anyone would ever suspect.
He held a handful of her shift in his fist. She had not snagged it after all. Rather, he had snagged her. She jerked in surprise, but his hold kept her from falling backward and tumbling down the stairs. His other hand trembled as it balanced precariously on a carved dragon head at the top of his cane. "What do you think you are doing?" "I… I heard music and followed it." His eyes blazed with accusation, and it unnerved her. "I'm so sorry," she said in a choking voice. Her nose tingled again. She touched it with her fingers to make it stop. "It's not possible you heard music from all the way down in your room." Sophie took a nervous breath. He stood there, one step above her like a giant, her bedclothes gripped in his hand so tight it shook. She hadn't heard him shuffle down the hall after her. He moved as silent as a ghost when he wanted -- even with a cane. She found the courage to meet his penetrating gaze. "I did hear something from my room. Then I was in the hall." Captain Murdock waited for a long pause, while the dust they had stirred up in the rugs pirouetted in the air and into Sophie's eyes and nose. "You should not be out of bed," he said. Sophie swallowed down her frightened apprehension. She tried to beg his pardon, but her lungs failed her, and she coughed in reflex. She covered her mouth with her fingers. "I'm so sorry," she repeated between them, her cheeks hot with humiliation. She stared at the fistful of her garments he'd snatched, aware his eyes examined her from her straight, waist-length hair down to her naked ankles. With a jerk, he dropped her shift like it burned his hand. "Go to bed," he said in a quiet voice. Sophie's nose had not quit tingling and itching. "Yes, sir," she said at once, but not soon enough to keep a sneeze from erupting. It came so fast and without warning, she had no chance to catch it before it doused him with all her rejection. Horrified, she stumbled down the next step, thankful the old handrail held fast. When she glanced back, he was wiping off his shirt with a look of disgust. “There have been only a handful of times when a book truly blows me away. This is one of those times. It's full of emotions from laughter to tears and all in between.” –D. Pearson “This sweet romance will give you all the feels and keep you turning pages. JFK to Dublin by Brooke St. James Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Sarah Spicer took this saying to heart, at least where love was concerned. She had given up any hope in ever finding a decent man. She was convinced they had only one thing on their minds and were untrustworthy and unfit for relationships. This was exactly why she had a strict no-dating policy. That was before she met Collin Ross. He was handsome, successful, and possessed a refined confidence that any woman would have adored. Well, any woman except for Sarah. Her indifference toward his charms made gaining her affection difficult. But patience is a virtue, and Collin was determined to prove that if there was a man worthy of winning her heart, he was the one.
Available on Kindle Unlimited "What are you thinking when you look at Sarah here?" Macy asked, obviously talking to the guy. I glanced at her with a terrified expression, even though I had no idea where she was headed with the question. She had asked it loudly enough that we all turned to look at her, and she stared straight at the ruggedly handsome bus boy who was now holding our used dishes. He smiled curiously at her, and she reached out to pat my back, causing him to glance at me. "This is Sarah," she said, horrifying me. "Would you mind telling us what you were thinking just now when you were staring at her?" "Macy!" I whispered. She smiled at me and gestured toward the guy. "I just wanted to know what he had on his mind when you two were looking at each other." She turned to face him. "I was trying to see if she was right about guys, that's all." "Oh, my goodness, you need to leave that poor man alone, Macy." I shook my head as I lowered my gaze, putting my fingertips and thumb on my eyebrows and waiting for him to walk away. He did not do as I hoped. Instead, he stood there. "I don't mind telling you what I was thinking, but if something's awkward…" He trailed off, and I knew he was looking at me. I could feel it. "Nothing's awkward," Macy assured him. She nudged me with her elbow, and I glanced up to smile at the guy, feeling red-faced and horrified. He wore a curious half-smile as he stared at me, letting his light eyes roam all over my face. I blinked and stared down shyly. "I was thinking she looked like sunshine, actually." I've read a lot of Brooke St. James's books and am delighted to say that this series is my favorite. Unlike some of her other series, the continuity here is provided by a common interest more than blood family ties, but we see this group turn into family. I love the art, the philanthropy, the fun banter and humor, and of course the clean romance. In this one, I love Sarah's standards, her realization about forgiveness, and her trust. Collin's respect for her is also wonderful, even standing up to her parents. Highly recommend. Ms St James has some very good insight on forgiveness. An easy book to read with a fairytale ending, What a terrific story! I was hooked from the moment I began the first few sentences....working in New York, I completely related with Sarah and the amount of people crossing the street at the same time :-) The story was just so lovely....I also married my husband after knowing him for a few days...and still going strong 26 years later :-) Author Brooke St. James Brooke St. James is a bestselling author of contemporary romance novels with Christian and inspirational themes and happy endings.
