Summary Harry’s scar, which he received when Lord Voldemort tried to kill him when he was a baby, keeps burning, and rumor has it that Lord Voldemort has risen once again. Even before he is back at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for his fourth year, he is having searing pain. Harry informs Sirius Black, his godfather, of everything that is going on so he can be in the loop and try to help him. Life during year four involves the Triwizard Tournament, a competition among three schools: Hogwarts, Durmstrang Institue and Beauxbatons Academy of Magic. This year, in order to stop potential deaths, an age restriction of seventeen is place on the competition, leaving Harry too young to enter. Each school is allowed one competitor, determined from the names placed in a goblet to be the school’s champion, chosen from the students’ names placed in a goblet, to complete three tasks; but, mysteriously, Harry’s name is placed into the goblet under a fourth school to guarantee it is pulled out. Now Harry must compete in a magical competition against those superior to him, and it looks as though his participation in the competition is not by accident; someone wants him dead. Will Harry survive the three events in the tournament, earning the Triwizard Cup and some money, or will he die in the process? Review Yet another wonderful installment in the Harry Potter series. Full of more Harry Potter delight as he once again faces Lord Voldemort. Full of magic and mystery this intense-well written novel is a must-read as it continues Harry’s story. Having now survived attacks of Lord Voldemort three times, once as a baby and twice at school, what will this year bring for Harry? Harry is hoping that nothing unusual will take place this term, but to his horror, a supposed murderer has escaped Azkaban Prison and is hunting Harry down. Dementors, guards at Azkaban Prison, are swarming Hogwarts, acting as guards to protect the school. Should Harry listen to the prediction of Professor Trelawney, teacher of Divination, that he will be dead by the end of the year? Will Harry be safe at Hogwarts or will the murderer find him even here with Albus Dumbledore watching over? Review I am again impressed with the turnout of the continuation of the Harry Potter series. Full of magic, magical creatures, predictions of death, and murderers, once again J.K. Rowling has presented a fascinating story that leaves readers wanting to stay up late and read more. Not long before he is to go back to school, Harry receives a strange warning from Dobby, the house elf, not to return to school because Harry Potter is in danger. Harry returns for his second year at Hogwarts anyway and he is in for another year of adventure. There is a great shock when, after students keep turning up petrified, rumors surface that the Chamber of Secrets has been opened once again. Harry and his friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, put their heads together to solve this unwanted school mystery. Who could be behind the “petrifying”? Could it be Draco Malfoy, a fellow student and rival, or is it Professor Snape? Or, as everyone in the school suspects, could it be Harry Potter himself? Review Once again J.K. Rowling has written an excellent Harry Potter story. This novel continues Harry’s adventure at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. There are magical potions involved, rumors to be figured out, and friends to rely on to help Harry solve the school’s mystery of the hidden Chamber of Secrets. Excellent addition to the first novel in this series. Caring so little for Harry, this family never even celebrates his birthday. One day Harry receives a mysterious letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Uncle Vernon freaks out and burns the letter, only to find more letters appearing by curious means each time he destroys one. After blocking the mail slot and boarding up the house doesn’t stop the letters, Uncle Vernon takes drastic measures—he takes Aunt Petunia, their son Dudley, and Harry to an old, rundown house on an island in the middle of nowhere. Much to Uncle Vernon’s dismay, the letters still find them, thanks to Hagrid, half giant and gatekeeper of Hogwarts, who ensures that Harry gets his letter from the school by delivering it to the rundown house. Here, Harry is shocked to learn from Hagrid that not only were his parents wizards, rather than humans, but also they were killed by a wizard known as You-Know-Who, not in a car crash as he had always been told; thus, he is famously known in the wizarding world as “the boy who lived.” Hagrid takes Harry away from the Dursley’s with him to the wizard bank, Gringotts Wizaring Bank, where he can collect some money his parents left him from a vault. After purchasing all the necessary equipment to attend Hogwarts, Harry rides the train to school. On the train he meets Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, who become his best friends. At school Harry must learn who is friend and who is foe as he and his friends go on an adventure that is part of Harry’s destiny, if he can survive, to find the Sorcerer’s stone. Review When the Harry Potter series first came out in 1997, I remember, due to its popularity, especially during my middle school years, I was determined to “hate it.” Now that I am several years removed from middle school, I decided I wanted to give the series a go again. I was not disappointed. J.K. Rowling has created a mystical world of magic, wizards, and adventure. The first novel in the series is well written, captivating readers to want to read more. Luckily there are still 6 more books from this magical world.
