Summary For the past ten years, Lady Rosemarie has resigned herself to knowing she must become a nun on her eighteenth birthday due to an ancient vow her parents made in order to bring her into the world. Her parents had promised, after obtaining a tear from the Virgin Mary to make the birth of their child possible, that if they conceived, they would give their first born child to the Lord. Everything changes, however, when a family friend, the Noblest Knight, Duke of Rivenshire, brings her news that there is an exception to the vow—that she must fall in love and marry before her eighteenth birthday. After much prayer and against the wishes of Father Abbot, the man who has been counseling her since the death of her parents following illnesses contracted when helping their people many years ago, Rosemarie decides to accept the challenge. The Duke of Rivenshire provides three knights to woo her, Sir Collin, Sir Bennet, and Sir Derrik. Will Lady Rosemarie fall in love or be destined as a nun forever due to the control of Father Abbot?
Review
Jody Hedlund, author of both young adult and adult novels, has written an enthralling story. With the backdrop towards the end of the 14th century in England, specifically Montfort Castle, Ashby, this charming novel following a common theme of this period—knights in shining armor rescue a damsel in distress. Although a little confusing at first, the story changing points of view between several characters throughout, deepens the storyline. Overall this was an exciting and enjoyable novel. I would recommend this novel to readers who enjoy mediaeval teen fiction.
