The Lost Heiress (Ladies of the Manor #1) by Roseanna M. White

9/10/2015

About the Book

Picture
Brook Eden has never known where she truly belongs. Though raised in the palace of Monaco, she’s British by birth and was brought to the Grimaldis under suspicious circumstances as a babe. When Brook’s friend Justin uncovers the fact that Brook is likely a missing heiress from Yorkshire, Brook leaves the sun of the Mediterranean to travel to the moors of the North Sea to the estate of her supposed family.
The mystery of her mother’s death haunts her, and though her father is quick to accept her, the rest of the family and the servants of Whitby Park are not. Only when Brook’s life is threatened do they draw close—but their loyalty may come too late to save Brook from the same threat that led to tragedy for her mother.
As heir to a dukedom, Justin is no stranger to balancing responsibilities. When the matters of his estate force him far from Brook, the distance between them reveals that what began as friendship has grown into something much more. But how can their very different loyalties and responsibilities ever come together?
And then, for a second time, the heiress of Whitby Park is stolen away because of the very rare treasure in her possession—and this time only the servants of Whitby can save her.

Luther and Katharina: A Novel of Love and Rebellion by Jody Hedlund

9/9/2015

About the Book

Picture
She was a nun of noble birth. He, a heretic, a reformer…an outlaw of the Holy Roman Empire.

In the 16th century, nun Katharina von Bora’s fate fell no further than the Abbey. Until she read the writings of Martin Luther.

His sweeping Catholic church reformation—condemning a cloistered life and promoting the goodness of marriage—awakened her desire for everything she’d been forbidden. Including Martin Luther himself.

Despite the fact that the attraction and tension between them is undeniable, Luther holds fast to his convictions and remains isolated, refusing to risk anyone’s life but his own. And Katharina longs for love, but is strong-willed. She clings proudly to her class distinction, pining for nobility over the heart of a reformer. They couldn’t be more different.

But as the world comes tumbling down around them, and with Luther’s threatened life a constant strain, these unlikely allies forge an unexpected bond of understanding, support and love.

Together, they will alter the religious landscape forever.

Jody Hedlund has written a captivating and charming story that will tear at your heart strings as you witness the trials and pain, as well as joy of two unlikely lovers, religious leader Martin Luther and ex-nun Katharine von Bora.  Jody has capture the beautiful relationship of this couple as they struggle through their own personal conflicts, issues with one another, and eventually falling in love.  This delightful novel brings to life a story not previously often told.  Readers will fall in love with the characters and the plot line from page one.  I would recommend this novel to readers that enjoy learning more about significant historical events and people that inspire and lift the soul.

The Inheritance by Marianne Perry

9/8/2015

About the Book

Picture
The Inheritance tells the story of a family disintegrating from conflicting loyalties in Calabria, Italy. Set during the period 1897 to 1913, the region was subject to earthquakes and tsunamis; the land harsh and poverty the norm. Superstition clashed with religion and a class system ruled the people. Calabria is the perfect backdrop for the tragedy that unfolds in The Inheritance.

Caterina is an atypical woman, and The Inheritance chronicles her life from birth to young womanhood. Born with an inheritance of loss into a society that has predetermined what she can and cannot do, she vows to live a life of her choosing. Caterina refuses to allow the limits of her gender, the constraints of her class and the demands imposed by those in power to stand in her way. Caterina remains steadfast in her commitment to become the woman she imagines. Her decisions ignite conflicts and fuel a chain of events that result in dire consequences for all whose path she crosses.

Praises for The Inheritance

“Like a classic star-crossed love story, the novel is written with lush detail enriched with both likable and loathsome characters. In particular, Perry builds strong and decisive female characters. Although the key action doesn’t occur until the final chapters, Perry’s exquisite descriptions will transport readers back to the time and place of Lorenzo and Caterina’s romance-the brilliant colors in villa gardens, the smells and tastes of decadent food, and the menacing sounds of the ocean during an earthquake. After the engrossing storylines come to an abrupt end, a cliff-hanger will leave readers anxious for a sequel to continue Lorenzo and Caterina’s tragic story. Solid characters and vivid imagery capture the mood, traditions and uncertainty of the time.” – Kirkus Reviews, December 7, 2012

“The premise for The Inheritance was inspired by the author’s genealogical research in Calabria, Italy. Marianne Perry’s research trip to Cosenza province is obvious in her vivid descriptions of the setting of “The Inheritance”. The landscape, colours, culture, native food, plants and flowers, and even the weather are all vibrantly described……Perry deftly weaves secrets and betrayals throughout the entire book, not only among the two families but the supporting characters, as well….Marianne Perry weaves a very vivid tale that might well have happened hundreds of times over the centuries. “The Inheritance” will definitely make you think about how our ancestors came to be aboard a transatlantic vessel for a perilous three week voyage to being a new life.” – Amanda Morehouse, The Ontario-Canada Genealogical Society, August 2014

About the Author

Picture
Family dynamics, genealogical research to solve ancestral mysteries and international travel are Marianne Perry’s priorities. A second-generation Canadian-Italian, she is the author of The Inheritance, a historical fiction set in Calabria, Italy from 1897 to 1913 inspired by her grandmother’s early life in Calabria. With a thirty-year career in education and communications, Marianne holds a Master of Education Degree from The University of Western Ontario (Canada).

A past member of the Board of Trustees, the Canadian National Arts Centre Corporation, she has also published non-fiction genealogical articles throughout North America. As a girl, Marianne fell in love with The National Geographic Magazine and dreamt of exploring the world. With her recent visit to Antarctica, she achieved her goal of stepping foot on every continent. The mother of two grown children, Marianne and her husband live on the shores of the St. Mary’s River, which drains Lake Superior on the outskirts of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. She continues to research family history and write non-fiction genealogical articles. In addition, she is working on her second novel and planning further adventures.

Old Amarillo (Amish Hourneys #1) by Sara Barnard

Disillusioned and feeling there is more to life than can be found on her family's Indiana farm, atypical Amish girl Katie Knepp bucks tradition and leaves everything behind, bound for a supposed Mennonite settlement rumored to be somewhere around Old Amarillo, Texas. But the trail to Texas is a hard one, laced with disease, would-be-could-be bandits, and a drought so severe that turning back isn't an option. During her epic overland struggle, Katie discovers friendship, even in the ever-present outlaw element, a strength in herself she'd never dreamed she possessed, and those in her past who refuse to become unwilling memories. Katie's story isn't Amish, nor is it western . . . it is uniquely Texan.

This delightful quick read is both adventurous and entertaining.  A member of the Amish Gasthof Village in Indiana, Katie dreams for a greater adventure in Texas.  Old Amarillo is full of different adventures, including being robbed, held at gun point, and stuck in a fire as the main characters cross the plains to Texas.  Author Sara Barnard has written a story that will cause readers to anticipate what will happen next in this novel, as well as the next novel in the series, Old Santa Fe.  I would recommend this novel to readers that like a western historical fiction, romance-adventure story.

Author Interview with Sara Barnard

Ten Behind the Scenes Facts About Old Amarillo

1. Sara wrote all original 51,000 words to Old Amarillo over a three-day period. It has since been trimmed to 47,000 words including a recipe!

2. Sara was ill with a massive upper respiratory infection that may have in fact been walking pneumonia, however she just came home from the clinic instead of having the diagnostic x-ray to make the determination.

3. She camped in front of the fireplace, writing, while her kids were in school and her baby was with Granny and Grandpa.

4. Sara wrote in between frequent naps and a constant stream of Dr. Quinn's and Hallmark-movie westerns.

5. Everyone is real in this book, except for Katie and Peter -- most even haunt Sara's own family tree.

6. Old Amarillo features characters from Sara's debut Amish novel, Rebekah's Quilt.

7. Old Amarillo also features flashbacks from Katie's Rumspringa to New York City . . . which is what the sequel to Rebekah's Quilt is all about. That book isn't yet released, but is coming soon.

8. Certain characters from Sara's debut novel, A Heart on Hold, cross over into Old Amarillo as well. Charlotte and Cotton come into Minerva's dress shop.

9. In Old Amarillo, Katie Knepp accidentally catches a tiny baby bat, or pup, on her dress as she leaves a cave. I took this from real life experiences when I worked at Carlsbad Caverns as a wildlife biology intern and caught a bat pup on my shirt after the bat flight one night.

10. One western Sara watched while writing Old Amarillo featured a woman named Amy, who was dying of cancer. She began seeking a wife to take her place for her husband, which she found in a prostitute played by Farrah Fawcett. That movie touched Sara deeply and left her distraught and crying . . . she blamed it on the infection. A few short months after, Sara learned that she was suffering with the same form of cancer that took Farrah Fawcett's life.

Heather owns and manages the freelance editing company Precision Editing Group, just because she isn’t busy enough.  Her editing website is www.precisioneditinggroup.com.

Heather lives in the shadow of Mt. Timpanogos, with her husband, four children, and one pretentious cat. In her spare time, Heather sleeps.

Review

Authors Josie S. Kilpack, Annette Lyon, Heather Justesen, Sarah M. Eden, Heather B. Moore, and Aubrey Mace have teamed up to create a fun and romantic spring vacation novella collection.  Each story is filled with characters that readers will fall in love with as they work through complicated or maybe not so complicated romantic relationships.  Each author has a similar, but unique style of writing from the others in this novella collection.  I would recommend this novel to readers that want to get away and go on a “spring vacation” into the wonderful world of the Spring Vacation Collection.

About the Book

Picture
Summary
For so long, Stella was known for her beauty. Now, with her heart stripped bare, she must discover who she really is.

Former pageant queen Stella Varland doesn’t trust beauty anymore after her divorce. Her appearance betrayed her and led to her brokenness—so instead of being beautiful, now she tries to make beautiful things, but always falls short. So she keeps her passion for her secret art to herself and focuses on her interior design work. But if she doesn’t get another job soon, she’ll be stuck living with her parents.

Contractor Chase Taylor is determined to live a life of no regrets after losing his fiancée in a car crash. Now he lives life at full speed, striving to see how much he can accomplish. He knows if he slows down, he’ll fall apart. So he returns home to Bayou Bend to renovate the town’s old theater, and is shocked to learn former flame Stella is the designer for the project.

Forced to work together, Chase and Stella battle their chemistry and their pasts as they struggle to compromise and come together on a vision for the theater. Chase doesn’t understand why Stella is such a subdued version of herself, while Stella doesn’t get Chase’s constant need for productivity and speed. Their wills clash as they attempt to hide their brokenness—and their unresolved feelings for each other—until Chase breaks through Stella’s walls and convinces her to enter her mosaic tile art in a contest.

A near catastrophe, a fire, and a small-town gossip mill finally force both Stella and Chase to realize that they have a choice—to hold on to the shards of their pasts, or surrender their fragmented pieces to the One who makes a beautiful masterpiece from the broken.

Reivew

Betsy St. Ament has crafted a well-written story of life—loss, pain, forgiveness, and most of all love.  This novel will touch readers’ heart’s and pull them in from page one as they follow the story of Stella and her somewhat complicated life as a previous beauty pageant queen and current interior designer.  Life is not always easy and can be full of pain and suffering, as well as success.  An excellently shaped storyline and characters that touch your heart will bring readers back to this heart-felt story over and over again.  I would recommend it to those that enjoy contemporary-romance fiction that comes from the heart.

Author Interview

Review

In a world where magic is at play, Charlotte E. English has written a story that will captivate reader’s imaginations from page one.  Told from the point of view of Mister Balligumph, a troll guarding a bridge that separates the human world from the magical one, this novel is full of humans and magical creatures alike.  It is a story of adventure, magic, and most of all true love. Join Miss Sophia in a magical and mystical world of wonder and awe.  I would recommend this novel to readers that enjoy regency fiction, as well as fantasy.
